Introduction

Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee is a cancer physician and researcher. He is also the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of ‘The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer’. In this book, he gives an intimate and sweeping account of cancer: its first documented appearances thousands of years ago; the groundbreaking discoveries of early scientists; and the fierce battles against it waged by millions of patients and doctors over the past century. A brilliant start

In 2010, Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee published The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, which won the Pulitzer Prize. The book traced the history of our understanding of cancer, from its earliest origins in human civilization to the latest developments in treatment.

Now, Mukherjee is turning his attention to the future of cancer treatment. In a recent interview, he said that he is looking at new ways to treat cancer, including immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

Immunotherapy is a type of treatment that uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer. One promising immunotherapy approach is CAR-T cell therapy, which involves genetically modifying a patient's own T cells to attack their cancer cells. This approach is currently being tested in clinical trials for several types of blood cancers.

Targeted therapy is another promising area of research. This type of treatment targets specific molecules that are involved in cancer cell growth and survival. By targeting these molecules, we can potentially stop cancer cells from growing and spreading without damaging healthy cells.

Mukherjee is hopeful that these new approaches will one day lead to a cure for cancer. In the meantime, he urges patients to stay positive and keep fighting.

Researching the essence of life

In his quest to understand the essence of life, Dr Siddhartha Mukherjee is looking at new ways to treat cancer. His research is based on the premise that cancer is a disease of the cells, and that by understanding the song of the cells, we can develop new treatments that will target the disease at its source.
